D is for Dictionary and Definitions
The dictionary is an invaluable tool for school, home, and work. Dictionaries provide the user with many different types of information. In most dictionaries, a person can find not only the correct spelling, pronunciation, and definitions for a given word, but also its origins, parts of speech, and various spellings or variations of the word. Dictionaries come in many shapes and sizes with versions written for young children and large print or braille versions for people with vision problems.
Points to Ponder
Discuss how a dictionary and a thesaurus are alike and how they are different. Determine when one is more useful to a reader or a writer than another.
Project to Pursue
Research to learn about Noah Webster. Write a brief paragraph about his life. What was different about his dictionary?
